NVIDIA, AI & the University of Florida — Part I

NVIDIA’s partnership with the University of Florida began with a powerful combination: an alumnus with deep ties to UF, a technology company becoming central to artificial intelligence and a public university willing to build AI into more than one academic department.

Chris Malachowsky, a UF electrical engineering graduate and one of NVIDIA’s three co-founders, provided the personal bridge. NVIDIA supplied advanced computing systems, software and technical expertise. UF committed university resources and pursued a far broader goal: making artificial intelligence part of teaching and research across the institution.

What began as a $70 million public-private initiative in 2020 eventually helped UF build one of the country’s most ambitious university AI programs. It also created a revealing example of how philanthropy, public investment and corporate technology can reshape higher education.

Who Is Chris Malachowsky, and What Is His Connection to the University of Florida?

Chris Malachowsky earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Florida before beginning a technology career in Silicon Valley. While working at Sun Microsystems, he met Jensen Huang and Curtis Priem. The three engineers founded NVIDIA in 1993.

Huang became NVIDIA’s president and chief executive officer. Malachowsky assumed major technical, engineering and operational responsibilities and later became an NVIDIA Fellow. Their different roles would eventually become important to the UF relationship: Malachowsky supplied the alumni connection and philanthropic leadership, while Huang led the company capable of providing the computing platform and technical ecosystem.

Malachowsky’s influence at UF has extended well beyond a single donation. He has advised the university’s AI strategy, promoted its approach nationally and helped connect its ambitions to the hardware, software and expertise required to compete in advanced computing.

How Did the $70 Million UF–NVIDIA AI Partnership Begin?

In July 2020, UF announced a $70 million artificial intelligence partnership with NVIDIA. The initiative combined a $25 million gift from Malachowsky, $25 million from NVIDIA in hardware, software, training and services, and a $20 million investment from the university.

The partnership expanded UF’s existing HiPerGator computing system with an NVIDIA DGX SuperPOD built around 140 DGX A100 systems, 1,120 NVIDIA A100 graphics processing units and high-speed networking. UF described the resulting system as the most powerful university-owned AI supercomputer in the country at the time.

The agreement also supported an AI-focused data center, broader access to advanced computing and UF’s plan to hire 100 additional faculty members specializing in artificial intelligence.

What Did NVIDIA Contribute Beyond HiPerGator Hardware?

The original announcement emphasized that NVIDIA’s role would extend beyond processors and servers.

The company committed engineers and solution architects to assist with installing, operating and optimizing the computing systems. NVIDIA’s Deep Learning Institute was expected to help develop courses and training for students and the surrounding community. UF also became the site of an NVIDIA AI Technology Center where graduate fellows and NVIDIA employees could work together on research.

Those commitments illustrate why advanced computing partnerships cannot be measured only by the listed value of the equipment. Powerful systems also require specialized networking, software, maintenance, training and people who know how to make the technology useful.

What Role Did Jensen Huang Play in the UF–NVIDIA Partnership?

Jensen Huang co-founded NVIDIA with Malachowsky and Priem and has served as its president and CEO since the company began. Under Huang, NVIDIA evolved from a computer-graphics company into a dominant supplier of accelerated-computing technology used for artificial intelligence, scientific research, robotics and data centers.

When UF announced the 2020 partnership, Huang publicly credited Malachowsky and the university with creating a foundation that students and faculty could use to advance discovery. NVIDIA’s participation gave the initiative the direct backing of the company’s longtime chief executive—not merely a connection through one alumnus.

Huang later visited Gainesville for the November 2023 opening of Malachowsky Hall for Data Science & Information Technology. He participated in the celebration and joined then-UF President Ben Sasse for a student fireside discussion.

Malachowsky remained UF’s most visible bridge to NVIDIA. Huang represented the corporate leadership and larger technological vision behind that bridge.

Why Was HiPerGator More Than a University Supercomputer Purchase?

Graphics processing units were originally developed to perform the many calculations required to render computer graphics. Their capacity to process large numbers of calculations simultaneously later made GPUs essential to machine learning and modern AI.

That meant HiPerGator could support far more than computer science. UF identified potential applications involving personalized medicine, rising seas, natural hazards, transportation, food production, data security and other complex problems.

The university also planned to make computing access and AI training available to other Florida universities, state and community colleges, K–12 schools, businesses and historically underrepresented communities. The larger objective was to develop an AI-capable workforce while expanding access to computing resources that many institutions could not purchase independently.

HiPerGator therefore became both research infrastructure and an educational platform. Its value depended on how widely UF could integrate it into actual teaching, experimentation and discovery.

Why Did UF Choose “AI Across the Curriculum”?

UF made its most consequential decision when it chose not to restrict artificial intelligence to engineering and computer science.

The university pursued “AI Across the Curriculum,” an effort to help students understand how the technology affects their own fields. That approach recognized that future doctors, farmers, lawyers, historians, business leaders, journalists and artists would encounter AI even if they never became programmers.

Teaching AI across a university should involve more than showing students how to operate a particular product. Students also need to understand where automated systems work, where they fail and how to evaluate accuracy, bias, privacy, intellectual property and human judgment.

The hardware made advanced AI work possible. The curriculum determined whether that capacity would influence the broader university.

How Has the UF–NVIDIA Partnership Expanded Since 2020?

The partnership continued to grow after the original HiPerGator investment.

Malachowsky Hall opened in 2023 as a multidisciplinary home for data science, computing, medicine, pharmacy, engineering and cybersecurity. UF later replaced the original NVIDIA DGX A100 SuperPOD with a fourth-generation system containing 63 DGX B200 nodes and 504 Blackwell GPUs.

When UF unveiled the completed upgrade in October 2025, it described the $33 million system as approximately 30 times faster than the previous generation. UF reported nearly 7,000 users and 33 million research requests during the preceding year, with more than 60% of its $1.33 billion research budget supporting projects that relied on HiPerGator.

By the end of the 2025–26 academic year, UF reported more than 300 AI-focused faculty, more than 200 AI courses and approximately 14,000 annual student enrollments in those courses. Those results show how the original partnership developed into an institutional strategy rather than remaining a one-time technology acquisition. Part II examines that expansion in detail.

Why Does the UF–NVIDIA Partnership Matter Beyond Gainesville?

UF offers a case study in what can happen when advanced computing infrastructure is connected to faculty recruitment, curriculum development, research and workforce preparation.

It also raises a question that reaches beyond one university. Maintaining leadership in AI requires continuing investment as new chip architectures arrive and computing requirements increase. UF’s progress has depended extensively on NVIDIA processors, systems, networking, software and technical support.

Malachowsky helped bring NVIDIA’s technology to his university. Huang leads a company presenting accelerated computing as essential infrastructure for industries, governments and countries. UF transformed that technology into a broad educational and research program—and NVIDIA gained a prominent demonstration of what an institution can build around its platform.

The partnership began as a Florida success story. It has become part of a much larger debate about who builds the infrastructure behind artificial intelligence, who can afford it and how much the AI economy may depend on a relatively small number of technology companies.
